A recent study conducted by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) asked people what they remembered most about a person after a first encounter. Nearly half of those surveyed said it was the smile that they remembered most. That was almost twice as much as what people said (25%) and far more than what people wore (9%) or how they smelled (8%).
In other words, your smile isn’t just part of your first impression. It is your first impression to about half the people you meet, including your interviewers.
The Impact of Whiter Teeth on Job Interviews
As much as we would like to think it’s our qualifications that determine whether we get a job or not, the vast majority of job seekers (73%) believe that appearance makes a difference in our job prospects.
In 2007, an independent research team conducted a study of how people performed on job interviews before and after teeth whitening. Candidates were given simulated job interviews by different people, and it was found that they were more likely to get the job (58%) or be offered higher salaries (53%), after they had their teeth whitened. The main reasons? They were seen as more professional and more confident after whitening their teeth.
