Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJD) affect an estimated 10 million Americans. In spite of how common they are, many people do not realize the serious potential consequences of leaving TMJD untreated. The most common effects of TMJD are teeth grinding, migraines, and neck and shoulder pain, but there are some cases where the effects are far more damaging. Drs. Ken and Marnie Collins of Collins Dental & Aesthetic specialize in helping patients deal with TMJD.
Because of the proximity of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) to the ear, some people with TMJD can develop damage to the inner ear as the poorly aligned jaw placed undue pressure on the ear canal and the parts of the inner ear that regulate balance and hearing. In extreme circumstances, TMJD sufferers can wind up with hearing loss.
The poor alignment of the jaw can also cause a domino effect of misaligned vertebrae down the neck and spine causing lower back pain and the uneven wear and tear of muscles and joints from shoulders to hips, and likewise, moving upward from the jaw, there can be uneven strain on facial muscles, and uneven wear of the teeth caused by favoring one side of the jaw over the rest.
Additionally, as people with chronic TMJD often turn to medication to deal with their pain. Overuse of pain medications can potentially lead to increased tolerance (or lack of effectiveness) of pain medications, and even problems with alcohol or drug abuse.
