Chronic pain leaves people suffering through nights and days filled with seemingly endless discomfort. Sadly, new research indicates that most pain remedies fail to provide adequate relief, because of the complex nature of our bodies.
New research indicates that modern medications fail to effectively relieve many types of chronic pain, because they can’t counteract the way our brains perceive discomfort. Appearing in The Journal of Neuroscience, the study showed that our bodies’ central nervous systems (CNS) often trick our brains into misidentifying the root source of discomfort. Complex and somewhat mysterious, a mammal’s CNS often spreads pain sensation away from a source injury to other parts of the body; a fact researchers highlighted by utilizing pain killing medications to block the communication between an animal subject’s brain and the root source of its pain. Despite this blockage in communication, the animal’s CNS continued to spread pain sensation, which the test subject felt in various parts of its body.
According to the researchers who performed this study, their findings could alter the way medical experts think about traditional pain management by placing a greater emphasis on how a person’s CNS receptors influence the way his or her brain perceives where pain is coming from.
TMJ disorder is a classic example of an injury which causes a person’s CNS to project pain in other parts of the body. While TMJ disorder originates within a person’s jaw joint; it can cause a myriad of vague symptoms, such as fatigue, facial tenderness, neck soreness and headaches. As sufferers unwittingly compensate for their bite problems, they put intense stress on other parts of their bodies, causing painful symptoms that may seem unrelated.
If you are enduring neck soreness, headaches, jaw pain and/or facial tenderness, you could be suffering from TMJ disorder. Fortunately, Drs.
