According to research by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), more Americans believe that your smile is capable of resisting the effects of age than any other feature of your face and body.
And a cosmetic dentist can help you overcome the effects of aging on your teeth to have a more youthful smile.
According to the survey, nearly half of all respondents felt that your smile could defy aging. The AACD surveyed more than 1000 adults and found that this was much more than people who felt other factors could endure with age. Here’s how they rated factors based on their ability to defy aging:
Body shape 10%
Importantly, the smile was rated even more highly by people who were over fifty than those who were younger. About 54% of people over fifty said their smile was important to making them look younger, compared to only 39% of younger respondents.
People even said that they were literally prepared to put their money where their mouth was, literally. Four-fifths of adults (80%) admitted that they would spend money on their appearance, and most of them (62%) would invest in the appearance of their teeth. That’s more than weight loss (48%), thinning hair (33%), dark circles under the eyes (33%), wrinkles (31%), and spider veins (28%).
There are many ways that age can show in your teeth. The first is discoloration, in which stains naturally build up in your teeth due to decades of exposure to dark-colored foods, beverages, and other compounds. When people see a discolored smile, they automatically think you look aged. For most people, tooth whitening is a great way to make your smile look more youthful.
Another way your smile can make you look aged is through teeth wear. Our teeth naturally wear down as we age. Shorter teeth can make you look older. Youthful smiles often have longer incisors than neighboring teeth, and when they wear down to be the same length as your other teeth, it can make you look older. Fortunately, we can build up your teeth with porcelain veneers or dental crowns to restore a more youthful shape to your smile. This can also help people with discoloration that doesn’t respond to teeth whitening.
