Depending on who you listen to, the introduction of public programs fluoridating drinking water was either one of the top 10 greatest public health achievements of the 20th Century, or it is an environmental scourge responsible for genetic mutations, infertility, and a number of cancers. It can be hard to tell who to listen to, and what claims are fact versus fantasy. Drs. Ken and Marty Collins of Collins Dental and Aesthetic encourage their patients to use dental products containing fluoride as directed and always encourage their patients to follow the ADA’s recommendations.
The American Dental Association (ADA) has published a 71-page primer called Fluoridation Facts that cites more than 350 scientific references that claim that fluoride in the water occurs naturally as well as artificially, and helps prevent dental decay. Vocal minority organizations such as the Fluoride Action Network takes an opposite view and has published their 50 Reasons to Oppose Fluoride.
One thing to bear in mind is that fluoride used in dental procedures and products can be toxic in large doses and is intended to be expelled and not swallowed. Because babies and children under five are less capable of expelling toxins from their bodies and somewhat prone to the temptation to eat toothpaste and swallow it, it is important that parents provide them with their own toothpaste that is specially formulated without fluoride for their age group.
For those concerned about fluoride toxicity due to fluoridation in the public water supply, Drs. Collins reminds patients of the import role fluoride plays in their dental health and the ramifications of the lack of fluoride. Do your own research and trust the most reputable sources. Healthy teeth lead to a healthy body!
