For those who are unhappy with their teeth, it may seem like there are plenty of options to straighten or whiten them. But what about people who are unhappy with the shape of their teeth? Maybe some teeth are smaller in size than others, or some teeth have sharper points or uneven surfaces. Dr. Ken Collins, DDS, of Collins Family Dentistry in Spokane, Washington, says many of his patients are surprised to find out that there are actually a variety of cosmetic dental treatments that can help change the shape of their teeth.
“A variety of treatments exist that make it possible for us to customize a treatment plan that is unique to the patient and their situation,” he says. “If they are just looking for a small fix for one or two teeth, we can use dental bonding or recontouring. If they want a full smile makeover, we can use a combination of treatments including porcelain veneers to give them a completely new smile.”
Option One: Dental Bonding
Dental bonding is a simple process that uses a resin material, matched to the color of the tooth, to help change the shape or fill any unevenness or chips. After application, a special light is used to stimulate the substance to harden so it bonds to the tooth.
Option Two: Recontouring
Dental recontouring is a process that is all about reshaping the teeth. It involves removing small amounts of enamel, which is the outer layer of a tooth, to help change the shape or size of each tooth. It can be done on just one tooth or several.
Option Three: Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers were first made famous in Hollywood when celebrities had them put on to perfect their smiles for the big screen. Now, they are becoming more and more popular among everyday people as well. Veneers are very thin, custom-made shells that cover the front of the tooth. They are applied to the tooth’s surface one by one and can completely change the color, size, shape and length of each tooth.
Option Four: Smile Makeovers
Many dental practices, especially ones with a cosmetic focus such as Collins’, offer what are called smile makeovers.
“A smile makeover is a custom plan that usually involves several processes to attain that perfect smile our patients have been dreaming of,” he says. “Many bring in pictures of celebrities whose smiles they love, and we work together to make their smiles match how they envision.”
