When a celebrity smiles, often we are blown away by their brilliant white and perfectly straight smile. But sometimes, to get into character, a star must change their teeth to match their current film’s persona. Here are a few examples of memorable teeth in the movies for all the wrong reasons:
His teeth were one of the most notable features of his character. Costumes online feature glasses and fake teeth to help those interested get into character. A study recently released was actually titled “Austin Powers bites back” and found that British teeth are no worse on average than American teeth, squashing the stereotype that promoted Austin Powers’ crazy crooked chompers.
Captain Jack Sparrow
Arguably the best thing about the Pirates of the Caribbean series of films, Johnny Depp’s portrayal of an eccentric and unexpected pirate captain warmed the hearts of many. Captain Jack sports several gold teeth, two of which actually belonged to Depp before the movie began filming. Reportedly, Disney balked at the idea of the gold teeth, but in an effort to try something new and edgy, they let Depp have creative freedom in many areas they were unsure about.
Ed Helm in the Hangover
No need for special effects in this situation. When Helm’s character wakes up missing a tooth, it’s the real deal. He was already missing this tooth and had an implant in that spot. For the film, they removed the implant and placed a protective covering over it to prevent infection.
Nicolas Cage in Birdy
Those missing teeth, thanks to severe war injuries, were really missing. He actually had several baby teeth pulled in order to give a more authentic feel to the role.
