Over the last two decades, we have seen an uptick in the prevalence of chronic and inflammatory diseases, which many speculate is relative to the generations affected being among the first to be raised on mass produced, processed foods. With that in mind, many people are looking for ways to promote their wellbeing by returning to natural and organic foods and reducing the amount of man-made chemicals put into their bodies. Drs. Ken and Marnie Collins of Collins Dental & Aesthetic believe that there is no substitute for twice annual professional cleanings, but there is no harm in supplementing your dental regimen with some of these natural remedies.
Natural Anti-inflammatories. Certain herbs and foods have been noted for their natural anti-inflammatory properties. Among the more popular are coconut oil, garlic, and ginger. Consuming these foods as part of a healthy diet can help decrease inflammation in your gums and throughout the body. For more targeted relief of inflamed gums, one can crush a clove of garlic or piece of ginger to release its natural oils and chew or suck on it with the affected teeth. Coconut oil can be used in cooking, or swigged as done in the Ayurvedic practice of oil pulling. Ayurvedic practitioners believe that swishing coconut oil or some other combination of essential oils for between 5 to 15 minutes per day can absorb oral bacteria from the mouth into the oil which is then eliminated by spitting out the oil.
Natural Antiseptics. Peppermint, spearmint and cinnamon essential oils have all been recognized for their natural antiseptic capabilities that can help kill harmful bacteria that resides in the mouth.
Natural Numbing Agents. In non-Western medicine, clove oil has been used for centuries as a powerful numbing agent to treat toothaches and sore gums.
While these homeopathic remedies are popular and can be interesting to try out, Drs. Collins maintain that they are no substitute for twice daily brushing and flossing, and do not eliminate the need for twice annual professional cleanings.
