Most people wouldn’t be surprised to hear that cavities are on the decline in America; after all, more and more people now have access to professional dental care. That said, although cavities aren’t as common as they used to be, statistics indicate that Americans aren’t necessarily taking their oral health as seriously as they should.
A recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that one out of every five Americans has at least one untreated cavity. This figure represents an increase over what the federal agency found when it conducted the same survey 20 years earlier.
Ultimately, when the CDC broke down the data, it found that the following groups of people had a minimum of one untreated cavity:
1 in 5 children, ages 5 to 11
13 percent of teenagers, ages 12 to 19
1 in 5 adults over 65
34 percent of African Americans
One-third of all Mexican-Americans
When cavities do not receive professional attention, serious problems can result. Sometimes, untreated cavities result in tooth loss. Additionally, if an infection spreads, root canal therapy may be required to treat the problem.
Unfortunately, many people don’t even know they have cavities until they visit a local dentist. Until then, they are at risk for all sorts of complications.
To maintain an attractive, healthy smile, it’s important to make routine visits to a reputable local dentist, such as Dr. Ken or Marnie Collins. Call their office at 509-368-7788 in Spokane or 509-228-3998 in Spokane Valley, to learn more.
