According to a recent survey conducted by the Small Business Research Centre at Kingston University, a smile and a friendly greeting is the number one reason why people feel loyalty to small businesses. In the survey of more than 2000 customers, 59% put a smile and a friendly greeting at the top of their list for reasons why they go to small businesses. Since customers also expressed a willingness to pay more to deal with a small local company, it seems that this is a good strategy for small businesses to pursue.
The Kingston University study also surveyed more than 1000 business decision-makers in what it described as small to medium enterprises (SMEs), and found that just over half (54%) of businesses actually pursue this strategy for creating loyalty among customers. Other strategies neglected by SMEs included: keeping track of customers’ orders (50% of SMEs followed this strategy) and encouraging word-of-mouth recommendations (50%).
This may be because retaining or expanding their current customer base was set as the main priority for only a third of SMEs.
If you are the owner of a very small operation, where you spend time interacting with customers individually, it’s important for you to maintain personal relationships by smiling at customers. If you are uncomfortable smiling because your teeth are discolored, tooth whitening can be used to give you a smile you are more comfortable sharing. More serious issues like gapped teeth or small teeth can be corrected with porcelain veneers.
Even if you are a slightly larger operation where your employees handle most of the customer interactions, your smile is still important. When you model smiling at your employees with friendly greetings, you can help them get into the habit of treating everyone–coworkers, management, and, of course customers–with a smile and a friendly greeting.
If you are having trouble sharing your smile because the appearance of your teeth makes you uncomfortable or self-conscious, we can help.
