Survey Shows You Should Put Aside Fears and Get Straighter Teeth
According to the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), not only are more adults deciding to get their teeth straightened, they’re seeing significant improvements in their quality of life as well. According to the AAO, the number of adults getting their teeth straightened rose to a record number last year: 1.2 million, an increase of 14% over the previous year.
To show the potential benefit of straighter teeth, the AAO released the results of a nationwide survey in late October.
People surveyed were overwhelmingly happy with their results. About 92% of respondents said they would recommend that friends and family have their teeth straightened if they’re considering it. Those who recommended it focused on an improvement in self-confidence.
But people saw tangible benefits from their straighter teeth as well. About 75% of those surveyed said that they saw improvement in their personal and professional relationships due to having their teeth straightened. Young people got the biggest boost in their personal relationships, with 87% saying that having their teeth straightened improved their relationships.
The biggest barrier to adults considering getting their teeth straightened? Fears about whether they were too old for the procedure or that they wouldn’t like the results. Clearly, these should not stop you from having your smile improved.
At Collins Dentistry & Aesthetics, we offer multiple options for straightening your teeth. We offer braces, the long-established method for tooth straightening that remains an excellent choice for many people today. In fact, for some people this is the only way to get reliable, predictable results.
We also offer Invisalign, which uses clear plastic aligners to move your teeth into place. This takes about the same amount of time as braces, but many people like it better because the aligners are fully removable and therefore don’t have wires that can irritate the cheeks–not to mention can be highly visible. It also makes cleaning easier, and you don’t have the same diet restrictions as with traditional braces.
People whose smile is crooked partly because of poorly shaped teeth or who are looking to correct a simple problem like a gapped smile should consider porcelain veneers, which can be used to reshape your teeth to make them straighter. This is faster than moving your teeth (it can be completed in about a month!), and it doesn’t require a retainer, but it isn’t the best option for everyone.
