Invisalign is a great option for those who want to straighten their teeth without the visibility of traditional braces, but for them to really work their best requires a high degree of discipline and care. At Collins Dentistry & Aesthetics, we offer the following suggestions.
First and foremost, wearing the Invisalign aligners only works if you can make the commitment to wearing them 20-22 hours per day. They are not designed to be worn while eating or drinking, so meals should be short, and you should brush your teeth before replacing the clear plastic aligners so that bacteria and food debris do not accumulate and show through the aligners.
It is important to clean the aligners the correct way because abrasives and certain chemicals can scratch the surface of the aligners and cause them to become visible due to scratches and sometimes yellow discoloration. The makers of Invisalign offer their own cleansing products, and some patients use a solution of ½ Listerine and ½ water. It is specifically discouraged to use denture cleaner or toothpaste.
Practice your enunciation at home when you get your first set of aligners, and if needed, when you switch to each next set. Some patients experience a minor lisp or speech impediment that can affect the “ess” and “th” sounds, but this is easily remedied through practice, and is often minimally noticeable.
