If you are prone to frequent migraines, jaw tenderness, or pain in or around the ears, a temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder could be the source of that pain. At Collins Dentistry & Aesthetics, our dentists can diagnose and treat TMJ and related problems.
The temporomandibular joint is the hinge-like joint that connects the jaw to the skull just in front of and below the ears. It is capable of opening and closing the jaw and also sliding the lower jaw forward. TMJ disorders typically cause pain in the jaw and local muscles that control the joint. Symptoms include a swollen or locked jaw, pain in and around the ears, facial aches, and discomfort or difficulty chewing. Causes of TMJ include arthritis, erosion or misalignment of the joint, and occasionally teeth grinding.
The most common treatment we recommend and provide is the creation of a custom orthotic night guard or splint that can be worn to help ensure proper alignment of the joint. We take impressions of your existing jawline and then use computerized 3D modeling to determine any missing tooth volume that could be affecting the settlement of the jaw and create the orthotic to fill in the negative space. Once made, the night guard or splint will be adjusted for comfort. Night guards are meant to be worn at night during sleep, and splints are designed to be worn throughout the day and night.
