On September 23rd we bid this summer a fond farewell and embraced fall with open arms. Summers are usually marked with big movies, lots of sun, and of course, bright smiles. Let’s take a look at 10 reasons we were smiling this summer.
The Phantom Pain, which is actually the eleventh entry in the Metal Gear video game series may actually be game creator Hideo Kojima’s last, but he is definitely going out with a bang. The game cost a staggering $80 million to make, and caused a rift between Kojima and Konami, the game development company that Kojima called home for decades. However, the game is selling fast, and receiving perfect scores from several review sites which is definitely leaving Kojima smiling ear to ear.
Inside Out explores the inner emotions of Riley (voiced by Kaitlyn Dias) a little girl who is dealing with an abrupt move to San Francisco. This movie is great because the whole movie takes place inside of her head and her emotions are the main characters. There is a great message throughout the film, sometimes if you want to be happy (and smile of course!) you must be a little sad.
Paul Rudd has a lot to smile about this summer. Netflix has recently released a prequel series to the 2001 cult classic film Wet Hot American Summer in which he and a myriad of other famous funny people starred. As if this was not enough, his entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ant-Man has been phenomenally received by critics and movie-goers alike.
A lot of people have mixed opinions about rap, but there is no doubt that Fetty Wap’s debut single “Trap Queen” has been popular across the board. While this song was technically released back in April of 2014, it has exponentially grown in popularity over the summer, and his smile has a charming lightness to it.
Love him or hate him, Donald Trump has been all over the news this summer in his run for the president. Some people say they like his outsider politics, while others think he’s a self-serving loudmouth. He has a certain talent for putting his foot in his mouth that leaves us laughing, but there’s no doubt that he is somehow able to smile through it all, though he often adopts his characteristic scowl.
Aquarius is a new hit TV show starring David Duchovny. It follows a cop and an undercover detective posed as a hippie who are digging their way towards the infamous Charles Manson. It is a pretty good show and we are so happy to see David Duchovny play a cop. It kind of gives us X-Files flashbacks! And speaking of X-Files, leaked footage of the reboot really has us smiling.
There is no denying that we like a good scare now and then, but one of the best shows on television to get your zombie fix, The Walking Dead, only airs during the fall/winter. Fortunately for us, a series spinoff, Fear the Walking Dead, was released this summer. It takes place before the events of The Walking Dead, actually during the beginnings of the outbreak in LA and is more than leaving us satisfied until the oncoming release of season 6 of The Walking Dead. Although it is hard not wince at the condition those zombie teeth are in, Mercedes Mason has a smile that’s certainly easier on the eyes, and she’s got some horror cred from her previous starring role in Quarantine 2, where she and a planeload of passengers have to contend with a mysterious virus turning people into—what else?—zombies.
Nothing says summer like a superhero flick, and right now the kings of superhero movies would definitely have to be the creative minds behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This summer not only did we get Ant-Man (see number eight), but we also kicked off the summer blockbuster season with Avengers: Age of Ultron. This fantastic film left us grinning from the mix of action and comedy, and Whedon also seemed to enjoy it with his humble everynerd kind of grin.
Officially named song of the summer at the MTV Video Music Awards, “She’s Kinda Hot” is a poppy tune that is infectious to the ear, and the recent award will surely has be leaving 5 Seconds of Summer smiling all year long. And this boy band from Australia certainly has some pretty pearly whites to show off, it’s certainly like the summer sun.
We love Chris Pratt. He has proven that he can be a funny guy in Parks and Recreation, and dominated last summer with his blockbuster The Guardians of the Galaxy. But it seems like there is no stopping that beautiful smile and he has come back with yet another hit film this summer, this time it is the long overdue addition to the Jurassic Park series, Jurassic World. Between this film and the new Avengers, this summer was the second highest grossing for films in history.
