Periodontal disease is characterized by inflammation in the mouth and gums. There are several types of periodontal disease, with varying degrees of severity. Typically gum disease is broken out into two stages Gingivitis, which if left untreated can turn into Periodontitis. At Collins Dental & Aesthetic, we offer periodontal treatment to help you keep gum disease at bay.
Scaling and root planning can remove plaque and tartar from deep periodontal pockets and is recommended that patients repeat it for regular maintenance every six months. This is usually sufficient for most patients, but in severe cases, periodontal surgery may be necessary.
Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss, and has been linked to diabetes, hypertension, heart attacks, strokes and a myriad other chronic illnesses. Doctors and Dentists have been working together on defining a Common Risk Factor approach to determine the relationships between problems in the mouth and systemic problems that affect various parts of the body.
The mouth serves as a gateway for food, air, and bacteria to find its way into the body. It also serves as a window by which mouth sores, inflammation and poor hygiene can shed light on other problems going on in the body.
