Kim Kardashian is more than just a reality star, she’s a powerful marketing engine, capable of swaying thousands, if not millions, of followers to try her beauty approaches. And now she’s going to turn that marketing power into promoting a new “organic Botox” product called Biotulin. There is some promise to this formula, but it’s unlikely to produce the results of BOTOX ® Cosmetic injections or the upcoming Botulinum toxin topical formula that continues to move closer to market.
The formula Kim K is promoting contains the ingredient spilanthol. Spilanthol is a fatty acid that can be extracted from a number of plants, most prominently Acmella oleracea, aka “the electric daisy.” Acmella oleracea is often used as a natural remedy for toothache, which has modest support from research.
But, that said, there are a number of challenges that this cream will face before it can prove its value. First, we don’t know if the promised results will really be seen in any significant number of people. There are a few people tossing around specific numbers about how many people see benefit, or that people can see a 30% wrinkle reduction, but so far there haven’t been any real studies that back up these claims.
Since spilanthol is an anesthetic, it’s likely to cause numbness as well as the relaxation of muscles. Imagine if your wrinkle cream made you feel just like when you left the dentist after getting a filling? Would that really be worth it? Especially if you have the option of an injection or cream that can get you the same or better results with only transient numbness?
And we have to note that spilanthol isn’t a secret. The ingredient is already in some beauty creams, and so far nobody has really been crowing particularly loud about the results. So if we had to guess whether this formula is going to live up to expectations, we’d have to say no.
And it’s not like Kim K has never been known to hawk products that are dubious, like when she got warned by the FDA about promoting her dubious morning-sickness drug.
