Juvéderm® also includes lidocaine, which helps reduce discomfort and swelling of the lips following injections. This helps you avoid lips that are too puffy right after the procedure (though this passes quickly in any case).
Several small injections are made in the lips, ensuring that the added volume maintains or creates an ideal shape for the lips. The procedure takes less than an hour, and you can go right back to work afterward. Options
Lip augmentation with Juvéderm® is the most popular and, we believe, the best lip augmentation procedure, but it’s not the only one available. Other options for lip augmentation include:
- Injection with more “permanent” fillers
- Injection with your own fat
- Surgical placement of tissue implants
- Surgical placement of artificial implants
So-called permanent fillers such as silicone can lead to problems. Silicone injections have been associated with serious health concerns, and can lead to lots of swelling in the lips. Fat injection is promising, but it’s still in its infancy. It requires a liposuction procedure, which is involved, expensive, and risky, and much of the injected fat doesn’t survive, which can lead to asymmetry.
Tissue implants like Alloderm, which is skin tissue harvested from cadavers but with the cells removed, can add volume and are long-lasting, but the surgical procedure has risks, requires a longer recovery period, and is expensive.
Artificial lip implants have a spotty record. Sometimes they give reasonable results, but in many cases they cause problems, such as infections. In a significant number of cases, the implant actually gets pushed out of the lip.
