TMJ disorder is a frustrating problem characterized by all sorts of vague symptoms that often confound clinicians and patients alike. Every day, it seems researchers discover more and more facts associated with this trying condition, with some uncovering potential causes that prove surprising.
Depression
Finnish researchers recently found that parental depression could be a precursor which may lead to the development of TMJ disorder in offspring. Published in the European Journal of Pain, the study looked at past research dating back over 40 years. After looking at these previous studies, which included over 5500 children and their parents, the researchers found that depression in either parent appeared to substantially increase the risk of their kids developing TMJ disorder by the time they reached adulthood.
A Strange Relationship
Though researchers couldn’t explain why the link between TMJ disorder and parental depression exists; their research clearly suggests that one does. In fact, the researchers called the link “significant,” and suggested that childhood psychosocial risk factors appear to have long-reaching physical impacts that can threaten long-term health.
