Your lips are an essential part of your facial appearance. They define your smile, and they are representative of sensuality, youth, and femininity. Unfortunately, many people are unhappy with the appearance of their lips. Some never develop the full lips they desire. Others may have lopsided lips. Most of us find our lips thin with age, too. The good news is that lip augmentation can help with all these causes of unattractive lips. It requires no downtime, can be as subtle or dramatic as you want, and it’s completely reversible.

What Lip Augmentation Can Do for You
Lip augmentation is a way to improve the overall appearance of your lips. It can be used to:
- Increase the size of your lips
- Improve the shape of your lips
- Restore balance to your lips
Most complaints people have about the appearance of their lips can be addressed with this simple procedure.
How Lip Augmentation Works
The most popular and best lip augmentation procedure (in our opinion) is injection with the dermal filler Juvéderm®. Juvéderm® is a great option for lip augmentation because it is a smooth injectable gel, so this is among the most common areas where Juvéderm® is used. This gives it the best texture for use in the lips where the skin is thin and texture irregularities would show through. Juvéderm® also includes lidocaine, which helps reduce discomfort and swelling of the lips following injections. This helps you avoid lips that are too puffy right after the procedure (though this passes quickly in any case).
Several small injections are made in the lips, ensuring that the added volume maintains or creates an ideal shape for the lips. The procedure takes less than an hour, and you can go right back to work afterward. You should wear lip balm or lipstick that includes sunscreen following injections, and try not to expose your lips to high heat (let your afternoon Starbucks cool a little more than usual). Heat can lead to increased swelling. If you do experience swelling, apply ice packs to your lips.
Lip Augmentation Cost
Lip augmentation is less expensive than many cosmetic procedures. Though you should never shop procedures based on price alone, the low cost of lip augmentation with injectables is one of its many benefits. The cost can also vary depending on the amount of augmentation you desire.
Lip Augmentation Options
Lip augmentation with Juvéderm® is the most popular and, we believe, the best lip augmentation procedure, but it’s not the only one available. Other options for lip augmentation include:
- Injection with more “permanent” fillers
- Injection with your own fat
- Surgical placement of tissue implants
- Surgical placement of artificial implants
So-called permanent fillers such as silicone can lead to problems. Silicone injections have been associated with serious health concerns, and can lead to lots of swelling in the lips. Fat injection is promising, but it’s still in its infancy. It requires a liposuction procedure, which is involved, expensive, and risky, and much of the injected fat doesn’t survive, which can lead to asymmetry.
Tissue implants like Alloderm, which is skin tissue harvested from cadavers but with the cells removed, can add volume and are long-lasting, but the surgical procedure has risks, requires a longer recovery period, and is expensive.
Artificial lip implants have a spotty record. Sometimes they give reasonable results, but in many cases they cause problems, such as infections. In a significant number of cases, the implant actually gets pushed out of the lip.
All things considered, we think Juvéderm® is not just the best lip augmentation procedure, it’s the only one we feel comfortable offering.
